Though it's an old game, the art style and the soundtrack have held up quite well, in my opinion. One great feature of this game, in my view, is that features a number of optional actions one may undertake, which have visible in game consequences, in terms of how people treat your character. This game is a remake of an older game. Time travel is a key plot feature; your characters inadvertently travel to the future and find out a monster destroyed the world. The cartoony art style partially mitigates this, but it is still an issue to acknowledge. I must praise the music in particular: some of it is just delightful and oh-so-very hummable (I'm thinking Frog's Theme and Battle with Magus, for example). Despite witnessing the end of the world, practically, I felt the overall tone of the game had a rather upbeat quality, which I appreciated.
The game is relatively easy; I don't consider myself a particularly skilled gamer, and I only rarely struggled (no offense meant to anyone who considers this game hard :-) ). I never played the original, but it apparently has a legendary reputation, and having played this version, I can agree. There aren't a huge number of these choices, but they are intriguing for the way give you, the player, a sense of control and of your choices having meaningful consequences. This is an RPG; you spend the game running around exploring, talking to people, and fighting enemies. The rest of the plot involves your efforts to prevent that disaster, via time travel. Regarding morally objectionable content, this game has a little: there was one statement in dialogue that I think might have been some form of double entendre and didn't care for (I don't recall exactly what it was at this point.)., and there are a couple of female characters who dress immodestly. Though with that objection, I would still recommend this game: it succeeds on so many levels and this issue is relatively limited.
Vibrant colors and good gameplay mechanics. First off, I'm completely biased. Also, a fantastic soundtrack.I don't mind the new translation, I actually prefer it. I loved this game when it first came out on the Snes, and I was thrilled to finally have it in a portable manor. Like everyone else said- It has a fun and mostly light story line. And the extras are mostly throw away to me. The raising monsters mini game thing (I don't know, I wasn't interested).A great classic.
This game brings back lots of memories from playing the original on the SNES. The added movies can be turned off for a classic feel but I think they add more enjoyment to the whole experience.
The DS Version boasts a beautiful touchscreen control scheme, includes the cut-scenes, lots of unlockable informational extras, extra quests, a new english translation, and a new ending.I have replayed Chrono Trigger several times on SNES and emulator, and I had a blast replaying it on the DS. Anyways I digress. The new quests are tedious, tedious, tedious. OK - so maybe it isn't the ideal quintessential version, but it is the best one out there so far.The game originally came out on the S-NES, was ported to the Sony PS with beautiful animated cut-scenes, and now it is a DS Game with the most features to date. The game itself was flawless on the Super Nintendo. Well they are. This is easily one of the best rpgs, no, best games of all times. Yes, ideally, they would have remade the game in 3D with voice-overs,and done well, that would have been MUCH better; still this is the best version to own right now.Chrono Trigger is a classic, and it still more than holds up to this day. The new english translation is not essential, but I highly enjoyed it. It would be awesome to see Hayao Miyazaki and his amazing Ghibli Artists bring this thing to life.
They really suck. The PS version had lag-time due to CD-ROM load. They do not add anything. The new ending was the most exciting aspect of the game as it expands upon the original story.Did I mention that Chrono Trigger, the story, the characters, the imagination, the style are all beautiful, classic, and iconic. I really wish they would do a quality motion picture big screen adaption. But the new ending that is unlocked is worth it.I cannot recommend this game enough (especially this version). Now if only they will remake it with enhanced graphics or a big screen movie adaption, I will get that.
I know that some people can find the fights repetitive, but those of us who are used to console RPGs expect this from the game. All of this is to say that part of me wanted to leave Chrono in my memories, but my sister got it for me for my birthday even though I am 28 years old so I couldn't resist.Boy am I glad that I got it. Chrono Trigger had a special place in my heart growing up and I didn't want to ruin it. I wouldn't have been upset if they didn't add them at all, but I wasn't disappointed with them either.
You remember it being awesome, but then you watch it again and are unimpressed. Having played some of the previous "throwback" games for the DS and Advance, I was a little skeptical about playing Chrono Trigger through again. Still, you can speed up various aspects of the combat (such as text, combat speed, and enemy action during menu usage) which really picks up the pace. The cut scenes that were added in are okay. You betcha. Chrono Trigger is everything that I remembered it to be.
They are a little bit too "anime" if you know what I mean. Great game. Playing Final Fantasy IV through again for me was kind of like watching a movie from your childhood years later. The split screen makes for a user friendly gaming experience, the music is still catchy and among the best to grace a video game, and the various sub-plots are captivating. The storyline, in my opinion, is still among the best that Squaresoft/SquareEnix has ever put out.
The SNES was the pinnacle of the console RPG in my time period and Chrono Trigger is just one more example of why I always say that. Would I recommend Chrono Trigger. Buy it today. Now if they would only re-release the original Secret of Mana for DS.
